The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources and the Chinese Song Zilong Group of Companies signed today, Tuesday, a contract to rehabilitate the lower doors of the Sennar reservoir, over a period of 3 years, at a value of 18.5 million euros.
It was signed on behalf of the Sudanese side by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Irrigation, Eng. Daou Al-Bait Abdul Rahman Mansour, and on behalf of the Chinese group, Saigo Hydrod.
The project aims to modernize the operation of 80 main passages in the Sennar reservoir, electrically instead of the mechanical and manual system.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Irrigation, during the signing ceremony that took place in the ministry’s buildings in the presence of Newtech Consulting Company, expressed the ministry’s keenness to complete the work on schedule, and the project is the first of its kind since the establishment of the reservoir.
For his part, the Executive Director of the Reservoir Rehabilitation Unit, Engineer Ahmed Al-Seddik Adam, said that the main purpose of the agreement is to modernize the operation of 80 doors in the tank, which were manually and mechanically operated. And it ends in 2024 AD, at a cost of more than 18 million euros, while the cost of the consultant contract is 111 million pounds. Adam expressed his hope that the finances will commit to providing the required amounts that were approved in the budget for the fiscal year 2020 AD, so that the ministry can meet the needs and requests for irrigation and electricity.
The representative of the (Sudanese) Newtech Consulting Company, Eng. Karuri Al-Haj Hamad, called on the Ministry of Irrigation to think about rehabilitating and modernizing the rest of the reservoirs to meet the new climatic changes in the Nile Basin and to keep pace with the new dam system.
